Learn About GHS Safety Data Sheets

GHS is a short form for Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals. Hazards communication is approached at an international level by this system. It provides a basis for chemical hazards classification. It also provides an approach in elements labeling routines and safety data sheets. Communication experts from all over the world standardized and outlined the system. International organizations and other stakeholders also had input in the process. Other existing standards from other systems in the world were integrated into this system.

The purple book is another name for GHS. It is a document which outlines the standardized order of information on safety data sheets. It also has the classification criteria for health, physical and environmental hazards that can be imposed by chemicals. Another component of the document is the standardized label elements that are assigned to the risk classes and divisions. The document describes the appropriate signal words, pictorials and hazard and precautionary statements which are in turn useful in user-based communication.

Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is the initial name for Safety Data Sheet (SDS) The term was changed to SDS to improve information received from different countries. The standardization of labels and SDSs is important because it enhances information received from and exported to other countries. GHS and international standards aimed at harmonizing the different standards established nationally and internationally.Hence, better global communication is enhanced.

A (Material) Safety Data Sheet is a system that contains information regarding the properties of a specific substance. Procedures for handling the substances safely are conveyed to the users by the SDS. in a working environment, SDS are a requirement for safety and product stewardship. Physical data, health effects, toxicity, storage and safe disposal of different substances are all contents of the SDS.

In the areas where the chemical substances are being used or stored, there should be SDS. This leads to enhancement in storage safety and spill-handling procedures for the chemical substances. SDS should be designed for anyone that comes to these chemical substances. The design should be such that any person that comes into contact with the chemicals should be in a position to understand the hazards and the components of the chemical substances. It is especially crucial for the personnel working in confined workplaces. This enhances safety in these workplaces.

It is very important that these SDSs are managed properly. Companies have started using different soft wares that are specifically designed for the SDS proper management. But before one can use these soft wares it is very important to determine whether these soft wares meet the international standards set by the GHS.
